Geriatric Fellowship Training Experiences
Training Experiences
The 12-month Clinical Geriatrics Fellowship Program includes diverse training experiences in the clinical, didactic, research, and teaching arenas. Faculty members supervise and instruct throughout these experiences with the Geriatric Fellowship Training Goals in mind. There are clinical experiences within our Fellowship Program that may be divided into block rotations or longitudinal experiences. A brief outline of rotations and longitudinal experiences are below.
Core Block Rotations
Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE): In this rotation, the fellow leads an inpatient interdisciplinary team, house staff, and medical students in the expert care of hospitalized older adults.
Geriatric Core Rotation (GeriCore): In this rotation, fellows have dedicated experiences in subacute care, geriatric psychiatry, housecalls, and geriatric ambulatory clinic.
The ACE Unit Transitional Program (ATP): The ATP focuses on how the care in the acute inpatient stay transitions to care at home, to subacute/acute rehabilitation, or to hospice care. Fellows lead students and interns in visiting patients that are discharged in the Winston-Salem area
Other Block Rotations: Other block rotation experiences include Musculoskeletal and Neurologic Rehabilitation, hospice, and interdisciplinary and professional development electives focused on the individual fellow’s educational needs.
Longitudinal Experiences
Longitudinal experiences throughout the 12-month fellowship include ½ day of Primary Care Clinic per week, ½ day of nursing home and assisted living per week, ongoing Outpatient Geriatric Consultation and Memory Assessment Clinic, housecalls, and outpatient and housecalls in Geriatric Psychiatry.
